Health Monitoring solution Preventing failures in civil structures

Description

Monitoring the health of a civil structure is essential for tracking aging, observing any structural change and preventing collapses, especially for structures subject to stress, such as bridges, dams or historical architectures.

With a network of IoT sensors, it is possible to set up practically any structure and monitor it remotely 24 hours a day.

The goal is to be able to monitor any structure with an easy-to-install, low-cost battery-powered wireless sensor system. There is no need to lay wiring, and it is possible to leave devices on the structure for years and collect a large amount of data to model its behaviour.

The characteristics of the solution to achieve are the following:

  • Innovative sensors for measuring all the main parameters of the structure
  • High precision
  • Competitive prices
  • LoRa® wireless transmission core
  • Battery-powered, long life and no wiring
  • Ability to observe and understand vibration behaviour over time
These characteristics provide the opportunity to have under control the managed structures, and with a negligible cost compared to that of the structure to avoid dangerous failures.

Solution

Move Solutions took up the challenge and developed a line of devices called Deck, that meet all the requirements mentioned.

The products have an innovative technology patented by Move, for which it can measure the displacement of the point where it is applied. It is low noise, low power and with an accuracy equal to that of the interferometric radar (0.01 mm), but with a cost about 100 times lower. It also measures temperature and vibration frequency and then relates all these data over time. More traditional sensors have also been developed with the same communicative heart such as accelerometers, inclinometers, crack meters and more.

Summarizing the solution characteristics:

  • Battery-powered, low power with two years of battery life
  • Displacement measurement (0.01 mm accuracy)
  • Acceleration measurement
  • Tilt measurement
  • Crack measurement
  • Temperature measurement
  • Vibration frequency detection
  • Loading and displaying data on the Move platform
  • Advanced data analysis and advanced algorithms

Application

  1. Installation of sensors on a bridge / dam / historical architecture / vertical structure / etc. Plus LoRaWAN® gateway installation in the area for network coverage.
  2. The sensors sample all the time, but when an attention threshold (chosen remotely) is exceeded, they transmit an event of 40 seconds (20 seconds before and after this event).
  3. The LoRaWAN gateway receives all data and forwards them via 4G cellular connection to LORIOT Network Server.
  4. Sensors and gateways are pre-provisioned in the LORIOT Network Server. The received data is authenticated and forwarded via API to the Move database.
  5. All data is ingested in the Move platform where it is possible to view, analyze, manage and relate with advanced algorithms to model the time course of the structure.

The return

With continuous Structure Health Monitoring (SHM), structural engineers can view the health status of a structure from anywhere and at any time. They can be alerted by an alarm for an anomalous event and can schedule maintenance or safety measures in advance to avoid excessive ageing, damage or collapsing of the structure.

With the application of this system, it is possible to guarantee top-level safety standards with a negligible cost; preventing disasters, saving human lives, optimizing investments, and having a clear situation of all the structures for which you are responsible.

  • AVOID EMERGENCIES, LONG CLOSING PERIODS OF THE STRUCTURE AND FAILURES
  • FULL AWARENESS ON THE STATE OF THE STRUCTURE
  • AWARENESS OF THE ABOVE STRESS LEVEL
  • STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR MODELING
  • MAPPING OF TRAFFIC TYPE AND DENSITY & OF STRESS INTENSITY
  • SCHEDULED AND CHEAPER MAINTENANCE INTERVENTIONS
  • DATA ANALYSIS AND ADVANCED ALGORITHMS
