LORIOT releases the LORIOT Edge Agent (LEA), a hardware-agnostic tool designed to modernize gateway management and cut cellular data costs by up to 50%. By extending Semtech LoRa Basics™ Station with automated recovery and Zero Touch Provisioning, LEA delivers the operational resilience and simplicity required for large-scale LoRaWAN® deployments.
Zurich, Switzerland, 22.01.2026 LORIOT AG, today announces the launch of LORIOT Edge Agent (LEA), a new feature designed to modernize gateway connectivity and operations within the LORIOT Network Management Server (NMS). With LEA, the Swiss company addresses one of the most persistent challenges in large-scale IoT deployments: reducing operational complexity and costs while improving reliability and scalability in production environments.
The LORIOT Edge Agent (LEA) is a software agent developed in-house by LORIOT that runs directly on the gateway and builds on Semtech LoRa Basics™ Station, extending its capabilities with additional operational functions.
Rather than relying on proprietary or hardware-specific implementations, LEA follows a standardized and hardware-agnostic approach. This reduces integration effort, eases long-term maintenance, and gives operators more flexibility as their infrastructure grows or evolves.
“The role and functionality of a gateway in a modern LoRaWAN® system is often considered ‘boring’, and that is exactly how it should be. The best gateways are the ones operators can forget about for years, even though small bugs or unexpected behavior can quickly become major pain points in remote deployments. With LEA, we focused on stability, monitorability, swift deployment, and quick troubleshooting, so gateways can be installed, monitored, modified, or simply forgotten. That is the right kind of ‘boring’ critical deployments need.”, explains Szabo Daniel, Control Systems & Embedded Software Engineer at LORIOT.
With LEA, LORIOT introduces Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) based on the CUPS (Configuration Update Server) protocol. ZTP automates gateway provisioning and certificate management, eliminating manual configuration steps and simplifying large-scale deployments.
To further streamline deployment logistics, the Edge Agent includes a universal installer that allows the same software version to be deployed across gateways from different hardware vendors, even in environments that do not use ZTP.
The LORIOT Edge Agent already supports a broad range of gateway manufacturers, including Kerlink, Milesight, Multitech, RAK Wireless, and Robustel, with additional partners planned in the coming months. At launch, ZTP is available for gateways from RAK Wireless, Multitech and Kerlink.
The release of LEA comes together with a new output architecture refactor and native CUPS integration on the Network Server side, strengthening the alignment between gateway operations and core network management. The new release has been deployed on LORIOT’s Community Infrastructure enabling the LORIOT Edge Agent as of today. A progressive rollout across public infrastructure and private server environments will follow to ensure a stable and controlled adoption.
With LEA, LORIOT continues to focus on building IoT infrastructure that supports real-world production requirements. By combining cost efficiency, operational resilience, and standardized deployment, LEA provides a solid foundation for organizations looking to scale LoRaWAN® networks with confidence and long-term control.
"The IoT market is reaching a point where technical capability alone is no longer enough. What differentiates successful deployments is the ability to operate efficiently over time. LEA reflects a strategic shift toward solutions that focuses on operational sustainability and long-term economics for our customers. With this new feature, we are addressing a growing need for solutions that customers and partners can rely on as their networks evolve". Yannik Kopp, Chief Strategy Officer at LORIOT.
