Bredbåndsfylket AS, a publicly owned Norwegian technology company, has made an agreement with the global IoT company LORIOT AG. The collaboration will provide Northern Norwegian municipalities with the necessary resources to foster smarter and more data-driven decisions.
Tromsø, Norway - 08.06.2023 - The Norwegian company Bredbåndsfylket AS (BBFT) and Swiss-basedLORIOT AGunveil their new partnership, dedicated to empowering IoT solutions and spearheading digital transformation in the municipalities of Northern Norway.
Since being established in 2003, Bredbåndsfylket AS has built and managed fiber infrastructure for its owner municipalities. The backbone network since its creation, has grown to over 1500 km of fiber.
A natural expansion of Bredbåndsfylket´s already existing digital infrastructure is to add IoT services on top of the pre-existing broadband network.
As part of their newly formed alliance, Bredbåndsfylket will now have access to LORIOT's cutting-edge LoRaWAN® Network Server solution allowing the Norwegian company to provide long-range connectivity and end-to-end solutions in the region.
LoRaWAN® is an open standard that enables the connection of a large number of devices over long distances with low power consumption. This makes LoRaWAN® ideal for public sector use-cases. The technology has proven to be highly reliable and cost-effective, and it continues to find application in an increasing number of IoT deployments worldwide.

The joint effort will aim to provide LoRaWAN® coverage in 21 municipalities in the area of old Troms County. Initially, the project will expand the coverage in the city of Tromso by adding 9 additional gateways for receiving devices data, resulting in a city-wide IoT network for Tromso´s 77 700 inhabitants. Following, the roll-out blueprint from Tromso will be applied in other cities.

Bredbåndsfylket AS started as a project in Troms County Municipality in 2003, trying to create a high-speed data network in the county to cover the need within the public sector. Commercial actors at the time had little interest in building such networks because it was not considered profitable.
In November 2003 a joint stock company was established, and construction of the network began with the municipalities and Troms County Municipality as owners.
Today, Troms and Finnmark county municipalities own 80%, and the municipalities the remaining 20%. In addition to broadband, Bredbåndsfylket provides services on top or related the network such as IoT, Firewall, management services, consulting, project management.
