Are LoRaWAN® gateways routers?

In the realm of networking, a router serves as a conduit that directs data packets between various computer networks. Unlike a LoRaWAN® gateway that relays LoRaWAN® messages from end-devices to a network server, it refrains from executing conventional routing tasks akin to IP routing commonly used in IP-oriented networks.

However, some LoRaWAN® gateways may have routing capabilities built into them to perform basic routing functions within a LoRaWAN® network, such as directing traffic between gateways and network servers.

So, while LoRaWAN® gateways and routers are distinct in their primary functions, there can be some overlap in certain scenarios, but they're not exactly the same thing.

What is a LoRaWAN® gateway?

LoRaWAN® gateways serve as a vital link between end devices and the network server. It collects data transmitted by the end devices and then relays it to the network server using a backhaul connection, which can include Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or cellular.

How do LoRaWAN® gateways work in the LORIOT NMS?

Gateways play an important role in the LORIOT NMS by enabling communication between end devices and the network server. They receive data from devices, pass it on to the network server, and can also send data back to the devices using a packet forwarder, the most relevant being the LORIOT Binary Gateway Software. The network server oversees this process, guaranteeing secure, dependable, and effective network functions.

LoRaWAN® gateway components:

  • RF Receiver/Transmitter: This component receives LoRa radio signals from end devices and can transmit messages back to them.
  • Processor: This oversees the communication protocols and data handling.
