FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Thalwil, Switzerland - November 6th, 2018 - LoRaWAN platform for the Internet of Things in the Digitalstadt Darmstadt / José David da Torre Suárez: “Prioritising scalability and security, we want to offer, also for commercial use, the IoT platform to businesses and private customers.”
The Internet of Things makes it possible to connect the infrastructure of a city or business and thereby transfer, join and analyse information. To do this, sensors must be connected to designated objects; these can then send or receive data to and from a central computer. The basis of this technology is the LoRaWAN radio network, which can achieve long-range coverage even in densely built up areas whilst remaining highly energy efficient. In this it differentiates itself from the better known, and comparatively more demanding, mobile and WIFI networks. In the digital city of Darmstadt, ENTEGA AG and the Digitalstadt Darmstadt GmbH are working together with the Swiss technology company LORIOT to expand the network architecture required for IoT applications.
The LoRaWAN Network of ENTEGA AG is already in operation, covering large areas of Darmstadt, the infrastructure conditions for innovative IoT solutions are thus already met. The completion of Darmstadt’s Network is planned by autumn 2018. LORIOT’s software platform is the network operating system for the connection between IoT end devices (e.g. sensors), central computers and end applications via LoRaWAN. José David da Torre Suárez, Executive Director of Digitalstadt Darmstadt GmbH and COUNT+CARE GmbH & Co. KG: “ LORIOT is a qualified partner that already has extensive experience with LoRaWAN projects in the area of Smart City. Scalability and security play a huge role for us. Using LORIOT’s solution as a base, we as a provider want to offer Darmstadt based companies commercial use of the IoT platform as well as enable private customers to use IoT solutions. That’s part of our understanding of what being a utility company in a smart city means.”
As software and network provider LORIOT supplies ENTEGA and the Digitalstadt Darmstadt with the platform and network where IoT based solutions can be connected. As a result of the large volume of data traffic that the sensors will trigger, this cloud solution must be particularly resilient and scalable. The subsidiary company of ENTEGA, COUNT+CARE GmbH & Co. KG, is the IT service provider of ENTEGA and operates LORIOT’s solution in its own data centre infrastructure, in order to guarantee data security and the smooth operation of the LoRaWAN network.
“It is especially important for both ENTEGA AG and the City of Science of Darmstadt to remain independent and possess their own protected software platform. LORIOT will therefore be installing its solution in the COUNT+CARE GmbH & Co. KG’s data centre.” underlines Digitalstadt GmbH’s Executive Director Joachim Fröhlich. “The LORIOT Network Server solution that will be used in Darmstadt is a mature product, already widespread particularly in Switzerland, which meets the highest of security standards.” adds Yannik Kopp, Head of Business Development in LORIOT.
With the Access to the ENTEGA IoT network via LORIOT the possible applications are diverse: from smart parking, were a driver is directed to the closest available parking space, to dustbin monitoring, with the aim of optimising the dustbin lorry route, all the way to smart street lighting.
LORIOT provides a portfolio of LoRaWAN software products and software services. Its software is currently powering a global public LoRaWAN network, and numerous public and private networks worldwide.
LORIOT's geographically distributed server infrastructure delivers low-latency access to LoRaWAN network and data management services. The infrastructure enables clients to deliver convincing Proof-of-Concept projects with extremely short time to market, minimized development effort, and fast return on investment. Clear path from PoC to large-scale network is available through the options single-tenant managed services and the option of software licensing of the LoRaWAN managment software for on-premise deployment.
Loriot works closely with LoRa gateway and end-device / sensor manufacturers to ensure high quality and compliance with security standards of complete LoRaWAN-based end-to-end solutions.
